Weekly Photography Challenge: Nighttime

1 Oct

I am not usually one to do a lot of night photography, mostly because I tend not to be out of the house much at night since my children tend to be in bed between 7 and 9.

When I am out of the house at night it is usually for a specific event and I am not carrying my camera around.

This week I did happen to head to downtown Portland, to the pearl district, to go to my favorite bookstore my go to place when I want time to be lost from the world, but feel like being inside; Powell’s Bookstore.

Here it is from the outside, lit up, in the new fall darkness.

And here is just one row of it’s greatness from the inside:

Also happy October, also known as breast cancer awareness month. This weekend I head to the Discover Pink walk which I do in memory of my best friend Margaret.

Next weekend I do my first ever half marathon, the Girlfriends Run for the cure, a fundraiser for komen. My race page is here if you are thinking of donating to Komen anyway this year.

In honor of breastfeeding cancer awareness I would like to remind everyone to do your monthly breast checks, here is more information on that!

Weekly Photography Challenge: Contrast

3 Jul

image

Once again a photograph from my run.  Can you tell I am spending more time training to run than taking photographs lately. This one was taken on an evening run, so the shade created even more contrast.

That is in large part because I am signed up for the Girlfriends half marathon in October, which is affiliated with Komen Race For the Cure. I have not done a half before,  in fact my first 5k was just this past St. Patrick’s Day.

I have a running partner now and she is good at pushing me,  which is great.  So we signed up for this run in part because we needed a run,  and also because I lost my best friend to breast cancer at 29.

I also have another friend who had been diagnosed recently and is now going through treatment.  I like the idea of raising funds for a cure,  but I also wanted to help her raise funds for uncovered expenses.

My Grandma has also had breast cancer twice, so I think this is a fitting run all in all.

Needless to say,  my mind has been on running lately.

Weekly Photography Challenge: Between

26 Jun

Between the trees
There is a path
Green forest, protection from the rain and sun
It provides a beautiful place to walk and run…

image

A place to visit and explore
Once a week, sometimes more.
A place to escape, to mediate
A path perfect for a photograph.

All photographs taken with my phone, while on a run. And the writing above is why I am a photographer, not a writer! πŸ˜‰

Weekly Photography Challenge: Extra!

20 Jun

My daughter had her ballet recital yesterday so we did something extra to her hair.  πŸ™‚

She normally has very straight fine hair, but for the recital the teacher asked to have all the kids have curls. So here she is waiting for the curlers to curl her hair.  πŸ™‚

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Room

12 Jun

image

This photograph was taken at the Lewis and Clark College Chapel in Portland, Oregon. Although I did not body this room often when I was a student when I did I always noticed the stained glass on the ceiling, encircling an organ.

On the day this photograph was taken the college was already out for the summer break and although the chapel was open all of the lights were out.

I managed to say a quick prayer, although that is not exactly how I think of it, for a few friends going through cancer, or other difficult times. Then I exited the quiet, dark, and peaceful room to go run stairs at the stadium.  πŸ™‚

Weekly Photo Challenge: Split-Second Story

Currently the Oregon Zoo is creating a much larger enclosure for their elephants. Today while I was there with my son’s school before opening hours we saw the elephants seeming to take some interest in the work going on.

It was interesting to think about if the elephants do find it interesting to watch, out if it is a misguidance to them because of the noise and the vibrations from the machines.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Twist

I had some difficulty getting to the game this week, but I managed to be inspired at the last second. My kids were playing with a kaleidoscope and were twisting the end to see the different patterns.

I finally got a turn myself and decided I could use my tiny phone camera to capture the beauty through the little eye hole.

Have a good weekend! πŸ™‚

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

19 Mar

This week I am sharing some photos taken with my phone. I have found that seeing flowers on the verge of opening up to the spring weather had been making me feel very happy and like escaping the inside to explore the world outside.

As I have been outside a lot more, with and without my children, I have been capturing the objects of my happiness as I see them revealing what is inside those tight little buds.

So here is my contribution to the challenge inside with a bit of phonography.

image

This photograph was taken from inside a parking garage in the Pearl district of Portland.

image

This photograph shows off the buds very nicely as well as the bloom itself now opened to show the inside opened up to the sunshine.

image

Last, a beautiful pink bloom.

I know a lot of the USA is still covered in snow, or experiencing winter weather, but here in Portland, Oregon my photography is starting to awaken to the spring again.  πŸ™‚

Weekly Photo Challenge: Three

25 Feb

My kids and husband got roller blades when I was in New York for my Grandma’s memorial service. They have been practicing in our garage over the last week.

On Sunday it was not raining out, so we all ventured outside to practice roller blading. My daughter stool needs help and I thought her progression makes a cute started the photos.

When we left the house I held her hand the entire way to this (unused) parking lot. When we arrived she wanted Daddy to help her, and my son really wanted to come help also.

image

Then my son decided they were not going fast enough so it is just Daddy and daughter.

image

Next she was ready to try all on her own.

image

Still wobbly, but excited! πŸ™‚

I am hoping to get around to another post this for this weeks theme, but it will depend on my ability to find time to do photo editing.

I hope you have a great week! πŸ™‚
