Weekly Photography Challenge: Adventure

8 Sep

This lake, this beach, has provided many adventures.

image

My Grandparents have lived here for many years now. I grew up coming to this beach at this lake and another beach at a section off the lake called Glenora. Glenora is where my other Grandparents lived for many years.

My grandparents decided it is time to move on to a place that is easier to take care of.

So we went for one last adventure there this summer.
In the first two days we went swimming, canoeing, sailing, and beach exporting. We also watched an amazing storm.

But this beach and this lake will be here for years to come, for many other adventures, for many creatures.

Weekly Photography Challenge: Silhouette

22 Aug

My grandparents live on Seneca lake and have for many years. They have a wonderful house that includes a beach house and dock. I remember when we visited them as a kid and they did not live at that house, but at that point my other grandparents lived on Seneca lake.

Needless to say the lake has a huge place in my memory. My children recently got the chance to visit with me (which they have done before, but neither really remembered) and experience the swimming, sailing, late night dinners on the beach as the sun sets, fire flies, and family.

My mom cuddling my daughter on a bench at a vineyard after a farm to table dinner. Watching the moon rise.

I hope they remember this visit and feel that upstate New York is as much a part of them as I feel it is of me.

Supermoon of August rising over Seneca Lake.

This was a bittersweet visit, as it is our last one we will share this experience on Seneca lake as a family. My grandparents have decided it is time for them to move on and into a place where someone else gets to do the upkeep.

I will miss summers that include this lake and these large family get togethers.

A Day to Sail

22 Nov

While in New York I spent a couple days with each of my Grandparents. My Grandma and Grandpa live on Seneca Lake year round, and even though it was October they still had their sail boat ready for sailing. I am not sure what time of year they usually put it away for the winter, but it was a nice surprise that I was able to join them on a late morning sail on a lightly windy day.

At one point we did have to paddle the boat, but eventually the wind picked back up. It was a very nice fall activity that I wish I knew how to do well enough to go sailing when I am at home. 🙂

Watkins Glen, New York

14 Nov

The amazing and always beautiful Watkins Glen situated in upstate New York right off of picturesque Seneca Lake, was one of the places I really wanted to visit again while visiting my relatives in New York. I have gone on this hike several times in my life but up until now all of them had been as a youth.

My Grandparents graciously took me to Watkins Glen but decided they only wanted to hike to the first set of long steep stairs. I made it all the way to the top of the last set of very long steep stairs and spent much of the hike alternating between jogging the trail and stopping to take photos.

If you ever have the chance to be in the area I highly recommend this hike, it is adorned with waterfalls that twist and turn in the path of the narrow steep cliffs of slate.

Now that I have photographed Watkins Glen once,  I would really like to go back and do it again at another time of day, and with a tripod. 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon

My Grandparents live on Seneca Lake, which is one of the finger lakes. They have a small sail boat that they still sail, at least when they have another person to ride with them.

I also visited Corning, New York where my other Grandmother lives, which is where the photo of the bridge was taken.

That’s all for now, but I still have a few more photos from New York and a few I want to share from Maine!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Morning

11 Oct

The last week has been a whirlwind of overnight flights, face paced walks (with my luggage in 90 degree weather, stretching at least fifteen blocks, to make it to a good friends wedding in Washington D.C. With a minute to spare), and car rides through Maryland and Pennsylvania, to New York.

In New York I spent two days at my Grandma’s house in Corning and then two days with my Grandparents on Seneca Lake. I fit as much onto that tone as possible including a protest of the government shutdown, a hike through Watkins Glen, and a sail boat ride (and paddle) guided by my 86 year old Grandpa and 83 year old Grandma.

Last night I was dropped off with my Aunt and Uncle in Corning, NY to begin our drive to Maine. We drove for about seven hours, until almost two in the morning, finally crashing in York, Maine at a hotel for the night. During our drive we passed through New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

This morning we woke up in Maine, had some coffee and are hitting the road again until we get to our destination, which was supposed to be Acadia National Park, however thanks to lovely politicians who don’t seem top think doing their job is an important part of their job description, we can not go to Acadia, so we will be off to the outside of the island.

I leave you with a picture I took right before hopping into the car this morning.

Good morning Maine!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Summer

30 May

This weeks photo challenge topic is summer. Since it is not technically summer yet I am mostly looking to past photographs to help show you what makes me feel like it is summer.

Here are some of the things that I found that help me to feel like it is summer.

This is a photo that I took while sailing with my Aunt and Uncle on their boat on Seneca Lake. I have visited upstate New York almost every other year since I was born because most of my relatives live there. Taking to the lake on a sail boat is perfect in the hot and sticky summers that happen there.

In case you couldn’t tell, the next thing that tells me it is summer is a wedding. I loved this wedding in particular for a few reasons. First because this is a couple that has played a very important part in my life. Secondly, this couple spent a long time making sure that getting married was the right step for them so I know that they are very happy together and that getting married was a very good thing for them. The last reason is that I just loved that the Bride and Bride’s Maids all came in to the ceremony on canoe! How cool. Plus the entire wedding party ventured on a hike down a steep dusty path so they could take photos in front of a waterfall near by. So cool.

The last thing that tells me it is summer is a vegetable garden. Here is a picture of some kale from my raised beds.
